What we do
Straterra is the industry association
representing mining in New Zealand
We are funded by members in the minerals and mining sector.
Straterra’s member charter states: “Our purpose is to enable socially and environmentally responsible mining, providing minerals for a sustainable and resilient future and enduring value for all New Zealanders.”
We believe in caring for people and places.
Minerals play a critical role in sustaining and enhancing modern life and mining activities must be allowed to continue in New Zealand, where we have such high standards for health and safety and employment, and stringent environmental regulations to mitigate or offset the impacts of mining.
We want all New Zealanders to understand the benefits mined minerals bring to their everyday lives.
We work to ensure decision-makers in central and local government understand the value of responsible mining and the contribution it makes to the wellbeing of New Zealanders. This involves conversations, submissions, and appearing before committees to present facts and evidence in response to Government policy, rules, regulations, and law changes, and local government plans.
Mining is a high-tech industry employing skilled people who are passionate about what they do and caring for the places they mine. We encourage diversity and inclusion in all workplaces and champion health and safety in mining. Our chief executive sits on the board of MinEx, the national health and safety council for New Zealand’s extractive sector – the mining, quarrying and tunnelling industry.
Our website gives an overview of mining in New Zealand and we are always happy to engage with politicians, media, students, academics, and anyone interested in the facts and evidence that support our industry and tell its true story.
