Mining is essential to life as we know it and is needed to fix some of the big problems facing the world including mitigating against climate change (building resilience into infrastructure, commercial premises and housing) and providing low emissions solutions across industries for the future (renewable energy infrastructure, reticulation and supply).
To reach decarbonisation goals by 2030, the world will need 50 new lithium mines, 60 new nickel mines and 17 new cobalt mines to meet demand for electricity storage.
Wind turbines, solar panels, water storage dams and batteries all require mined minerals in building and operation.
